If you require any additional information other than whats provided in this document please contact me and I would love to dive into more details after following the necessary procedure.

Summary

I am currently a Product Designer at the Scripps Research Institute where I am working on projects like:

All of Us Research Program - Building one of the most diverse health database in history.
DETECT app - Using wearable data to gain insights into what leads to early detection for COVID-19 and other viral illnesses.

I also led design for our three latest projects:

PROGRESS - Study to help understand metabolic health and diseases like type 2 diabetes.
PowerMom - Study to reduce health disparities and learn more about what leads to healthy pregnancies and healthy babies for every pregnant person.
REFRESH -Study to learn more about the physical and psychological dimensions of sleep.

Background

The Scripps Research Institute's Digital Trials Center (DTC)builds applications to help researchers carry out studies to solve problems in the life sciences. Our platform is based off of Apples Research Kit and we work with confidential health data for participants from all walks of life making privacy and accessibility crucial in our designs.

Scripps DTC works with CareEvolution to develop/maintain our digital products and works with WONDROS for marketing/design for the All of Us project. As a designer I work with these partners and their cross functional team to bring products and features to fruition.

Design Process

This is rough outline of the design process I've used for many of my projects at Scripps Research.

Design Process Outline

All of Us Research Program

For the All of Us Research Program I:

  • Ran a UX audit where I identified pain points in accessibility and worked with developers/designers to solve them.
  • Worked with designers to create a journey map for the program to be shared with potential partners and internally.
  • Led the redesign and implementation of the settings screen with an additional feature of sharing the program with other participants.
  • Led the design and implementation of the In app feedback mechanism to get user feedback at any point in the app and help improve the overall experience.
  • Helped create, run and analyze usability studies.

Problem

Participants have no quick and easy way to voice their feedback on the All of Us app. The only way is by calling, via live chat or email which require a certain amount of friction.

Scripps has no quick way of gathering qualitative data from participants and relies heavily on quantitative data and the feedback participants leave via support channels which is scarce.

Solution

An in app feedback mechanism that requires input via smileys which is quick and simple. An optional feedback text box for additional comments and link to external support channels in case a participants wants to give more info.

Impact

We can now easily identify which processes to prioritize and allocate resources accordingly to improve it and help improve the overall experience. Qualitative data can also help get buy in from stakeholders

DETECT

For DETECT I:

  • Created and implemented new user flows.
  • Ran a usability study for home screen redesigns to understand how users engaged with the new screens and which direction the team needed to move in.
  • Designed prototypes for data visualization.

Problem

Create a data visualization to illustrate to participants which way their resting heart rate is trending.

This visualization is to illustrate what the DETECT AI team is building.

Solution (still being iterated)

Immediately telling the participant what the graph is trying to depict rather than having them figure it out from the graph.

The intuitive meaning behind the colors used also make it easily comprehensive.

Impact

This graph has not been implemented yet on the DETECT app . When user testing was conducted on this feature and 3 others for a spot on the home screen, this feature came out as most likely to recommend amongst our testers.

PROGRESS

PROGRESS is one of our newer projects here at Scripps. For this study I am the lead designer and I:

  • Assisted in branding and logo creation. Led creation of assets (icons and animations) and mini design system that is used for app.
  • Created low fidelity to high fidelity prototypes.
  • Created a journey map to be shared with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Designed a novel data visualization (of glucose readings to food consumed), to incentivize and delight participants through their 10 day study period of the experience.
